AFTER WALKING 2930 MILES this year I've arrived at Times Square in the heart of New York's theater district. Much to my surprise, the cross-country virtual walk took just 35 weeks -- much quicker than I'd originally thought. (Last January I estimated New York by Christmas.)
The final stretch to the finish line passed rather quickly during those last miles... from a tree-lined countryside, through the Holland Tunnel, and finally emerging in the thick of an urban forest. That was quite a shock!
Resting on a busy Broadway corner with just two-thirds of the year gone, it became obvious that my journey wasn't over. There is still plenty of time and the road continues on. Of course, I'm happy to have traveled such a significant distance, but there's always something to discover around the next bend beyond the horizon. I treasure all that I've experienced, but it's the lure of each new day that urges me forward. So, for now, I've set my sights on Brighton Beach and Coney Island to buy a hot dog and dip my toe in the Atlantic Ocean.
After some deliberation I've set a course south to Washington DC, the Appalachian Trail, and the central part of the country. But how far I'll travel remains a mystery. After all, there are still 17 weeks remaining in the year...
