I JUST CAN'T PASS the Illinois town of Joliet without stoping to see the old state prison featured in the legendary Blues Brothers motion picture film. It was here that "Joliet Jake" Blues (John Belushi) was paroled before he and his brother, Elwood (Dan Aykroyd), set out on a "mission from God" to put together their old band to save the Catholic orphanage where they were raised. It was here that the whole epic tale of those Blues brothers began!
The Joliet prison was built by convict labor in 1885 and originally had no running water or toilets in the prisoner's cells. Back then, if "you did the crime you really did the time!" The correctional center has been closed since 2002 due to budget cuts and deteriorating structural conditions. Although the inmates are gone, the local historical society is hoping to provide guided tours of the penitentiary for interested Route 66 travelers.
