EXIT 333 on my journey across the Nevada desert leads to an abandoned town called Deeth. This unusual name was derived either from an early pioneer or Deeth for travelers without enough water. Either way, I'll pass!

It was once a stop on the Central Pacific Railroad to supply settlers in the Starr and Ruby valleys, but with a name like Deeth no wonder it's now a "ghost town" with just a few hearty souls remaining. One post office serves a population of twenty.

A second look at the exit sign suggests that "Deeth - Starr Valley" is nearby. Although filmmaker George Lucas may have never visited this desolate area, it's the perfect place to build a secret weapon like the Empire's Death Star, that moon-sized space station that could destroy an entire planet.

I'd better keep moving on...  At 550 miles into my journey, the desert enchantment is beginning to play tricks on my mind and I'm happy to leave this "brush with Death" behind!
