LAST YEAR I took up walking as a fitness activity to stay healthy and keep in shape. The endeavors have proved successful as I managed to log over 2400 miles -- equivalent to a trip from New York to Miami and back. This year I'm continuing the commitment as a virtual walk across America, and each week plan to check my progress against Google maps, including their street view. So while I walk our local streets and neighborhoods, I'll measure the distance as an imaginary trek toward the East Coast. It should prove interesting -- one step at a time!
January was a very successful month full of enthusiasm to meet the challenge set before me. I made good progress despite rainy weather, logging 285 miles for the month, which virtually took me across California to Reno, Nevada. It's been a pleasure to see how much territory can be covered with a persistent exercise routine. Presently I've completed the second week of February and already halfway across the State of Nevada (past Winnemucca) along Highway 80. My average weekly progress for February has been 65 miles, while enjoying the casinos and slot machines along the way. (Remember, the miles are real but the scenery is imaginary!)
