Our veggie garden revealed a real surprise this season, a plant we unintentionally sowed among our regular veggies. It's a Romanesco broccoli, a large pale green cluster of florets that grow in a intriguing fractal pattern, repeating its intricate shape with decreasing regularity.
The flowers are edible with a sweet nutty flavor that tastes much like a blend of cauliflower and broccoli. Not what we expected, at all! When they first appeared we thought there was a mistake -- until we discovered the nursery tag. Not all broccoli is the same. Next season we'll be more careful in our selection!
